Restoration

Retrieving Guisachan:

Our Golden Retrievers’ Ancestral Home

The roof of Guisachan House was removed in 1939 to avoid taxes on what was then a magnificent mansion. In the intervening years, Guisachan suffered enormous decay and trees grew within its walls, leaving the house largely hidden from view. In 2018, the Friends financed the removal of trees growing within and around the Guisachan House ruins as a preamble to the stabilization of the ruins. Much of the edifice has so deteriorated that it must be knocked down for reasons of public safety. But some walls can be stabilized.

To do this, we need your help. Individual gift options are possible.

  • $1750 will stabilize a large window
  • $1550 will stabilize and simulate a small window
  • $1250 will insert concrete lintel to existing window head
  • $800 will block a small window
  • $400 will repair adjacent window stone work
  • $200 will plaster and paint dummy window

DOWNLOAD Donation Form (PDF)

There will also be a General Construction Fund to which smaller donations can be directed, the proceeds being used for the overall stabilization procedure. Restoration will begin with the filling in of windows and the stabilization of walls around them. The cost of each window will depend on its condition and that of the walls surrounding it.

Retrieving Guisachan: Our Goldens’ Ancestral Home

T   his past summer, in Scotland, at the 150th Anniversary celebration of the founding of our breed, the owner of the mansion ruins saw how much the Golden community reveres this site. He then announced his intention to stabilize the ruins and perhaps create a Golden Retriever educational site. Golden owners around the world are being asked to help bring about this wonderful endeavor.

This past fall, the Friends of Guisachan financed the removal of the trees inside and around the walls of the ruins as well as a six foot security fence.

Golden lovers from the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and Australia have stepped up to support this campaign. Won’t you add your name to the Honor Roll of Donors and help retrieve our breed’s ancestral home?

Scottish Club Assumes Responsibility for Guisachan Lease and Statue

Golden Retriever statue
Doreen McGugan, chairman of the Golden Retriever Club of Scotland (left) shared a toast with Joy Viola, President of the Friends of Guisachan,(right) at the 2014 unveiling of the life-size bronze statue of a Golden on historic Guisachan land. Ownership of and responsibility for the statue and garden has now passed from the Friends to the Scottish Club.

The Friends of Guisachan have signed over the long-term lease on historic Guisachan land and the Golden Retriever statue thereon to the Golden Retriever Club of Scotland.

The transfer required all manner of legal documents “in the Scottish format” to conclude the transfer, but with the signatures of the landlord, Nigel Fraser, The Chairman of the GRCS, Doreen McGugan, and the President and Treasurer of the Friends of Guisachan, Joy Viola and Patricia Lindquist, the transfer was concluded making the Scottish Club now responsible for the mandatory liability insurance and the maintenance of the statue and the small garden surrounding it.

An ancillary agreement between the Friends of Guisachan and the GRCS covered the transfer of the $10,000 statue endowment fund to cover costs for the immediate future. A bequest from a private donor will augment the fund in due time.

The statue was funded by the Friends of Guisachan and was unveiled in 2014. It has become a landmark for Golden Retriever visitors and other tourists to the area as well.

The Friends of Guisachan are very proud to memorialize the original birthplace of the Golden Retriever with a statue in Tomich, Scotland. This is particularly exciting as we approach the 150th anniversary of our breed in 2018. We are grateful for our colleagues in the Golden Retriever Club of Scotland who have taken ownership of the statue and surrounding grounds and for the many supporters in this effort through recent years”, says John Cotter, Friends Chairman of the Board of Directors. “Worldwide,Golden Retriever lovers now know where and when our breed was established,” he added.
